Day 1: The Beginning of My Peruvian Adventure

Earlier this summer I went to Peru with 3 companions to be inspired by its rich culture and natural wonders. Along with Patrick, Susanne and Marc, I found a place very unique in this world, and very far removed from my life here in NYC. In these photos you will see the highlights of my expedition to Cuzco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu. In the days that follow I will show you the many colorful characters and beautiful creatures I met, including llamas, alpacas, condors, shamans, dancers, and farmers. This week I will be posting a diary entry for each day of my trip.

Day 1: The Beginning of My Peruvian Adventure

I arrived in Lima late at night, my flight to Cuzco didn't depart until early the next day so I decide to leave the airport for a night on the town.

I went for dinner in Mira Flores, at La Rosa Nautica, which was situated on a pier right on the Pacific. It was magical eating great ceviche with the waves crashing in the moonlight.

After dinner Susanne and I had a Cusquena in a bar located in an old train car in Barranco, a happening Lima neighborhood.

I wish there was more time to explore Lima but my flight left at 5:30 to Cuzco.

When I arrived at the hotel in Cuzco I found Coca tea to relieve my altitude sickness, it worked!

I was tired after 24 hours of traveling, but couldn't resist the urge to explore. The streets were filled with celebrating people as this was the time the Inti Raymi. This festival happenes once a year during the winter solstice.

Walkabout

Everyone needs a break from the city one in a while, we know we do. Patrick and I thought it would be fun to scout out some lovely walks close by and what we found were some wonderlands for sure. So here are are a few springtime jaunts in and around NYC.

Trip #1 The Palisades
Can you imagine a land of waterfalls, ruins, and rock cliffs just 15 minutes from the GW Bridge on the NJ Side? Well it exists!

Trip# 2 the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens
Sure it's not the best kept secret, but there is no denying it is a magical place. Check it out in the next few weeks for the Cherry Blossom Festival, we know we will.

Trip #3 Sandy Hook Nature Reserve
Our walk took us through a varied sandy landscape with holly forests, cacti and dunes. Then we drove down along the coast to Asbury Park which was a fun place to check out with its Victorian architecture and curious shops.

Oh Paris, with its rich food, history, and culture I will always find new inspirations. That is what happened during AW Paris Fashion week. I went to show my collection at Capsule where I spent most of my time, but I did manage to explore some of my favorite haunts and find new ones.

My first day I played the tourist and went to Versailles, so beautiful!

The next day I got in some shopping at stores like Merci and Colette for the new, and Kiliwatch, Noir Kennedy, and Thank God I'm a Vip for vintage. I ended the day at the Hemingway Bar for a well desirved fancy drink.

Iceland Day 5

On the fifth day, it was time to head back to Reykjavik. I took route 33 along the coast, stopping by the Urridafoss waterfall and the seaside villages of Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki along the way.

Iceland Day 4

We set sail for Heimaey Island off the south coast of Iceland. It was a great boat ride especially when passing the uninhabited islands along the way. I explored new land that came about during an eruption in 1973, and the town was very cute for quainting.

My 3rd day in Iceland, I set out south from Reykjavik along the Ring Road. My destination was the Hotel Ranga, about 120 km southeast of the city, considered the best place in Iceland to see Northern Lights. From there, I drove another 90km to Vik, stopping along the way to visit a black sand beach, more waterfalls, gnome houses, and some interesting taxidermy. Our first stop was Seljalandsfoss, which created amazing ice formations with its falling water and mist.

Inspiration Vacation

Over the weekend we fell in love with a magic waterfall swimming hole on our trip to the Finger Lakes...

We shot some super 8 at the Watkins Glen gorge.

We stayed at the Black Sheep inn in Hammondsport where the owners grow their own food to make your breakfast. We ate at The Stone Cat Cafe, which serves a great meal and they brew Gimmee Coffee,

which we found out started in the Finger Lakes in Ithaca before coming to NYC.

We shopped at old barns filled with antiques along the country roads,

and drank local wine at the various vineyards on Keuka and Seneca* lake.

Dream getaway: A year-long trip around the world.

Last trip you really loved: My visit to Buenos Aires and Uruguay last August - I went with my whole family. We all try to go away together once a year and it always turns out to be an amazing vacation.

Advice for the solo traveler: You could fall in love. For example, my parents met on a plane. My grandfather's advice to my dad was, "Make sure you sit next to the most beautiful girl on the plane." There were no assigned seats back then, but even today, you can always ask someone to move. You could also use this tip on the train, too.

Favorite in-city escape: Last weekend, I visited the Rockaways in Queens, where I went to the beach. I had the best taco ever at Rockaway Taco. That alone was worth the trip. There's also a farm stand and a cute surf shop with swimsuits and friendship bracelets. I also recommend going to Red Hook for a walk through the Liberty Sunset Garden Center, followed by a snack at Red Hook Lobster Pound or Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies. You can also go grocery shopping at Fairway, so it's like taking a vacation and doing errands in one trip.

Meal you would travel for: Anything at Le Pigeon in Portland.

Best group vacation: Paris, where I was showing my collection during fashion week last year. I went with two friends, Kat and Jacqueline. The three of us shared a tiny room at the Hotel Amour in Pigalle and stayed up every night eating treats from the nearby Rose Bakery* and making up songs. It was an epic traveling slumber party!

Ideal solo getaway: London. I spent a 6 months there a few years ago and was alone most of the time. There was so much to see and do, and it was easy to travel all around Europe from there.

Clothing you can't live without on a trip: A comfortable but chic pair of shoes, and a bathing suit - you never know...

Worst travel experience: Last February, I got stuck in Florida during the blizzard; my flight was canceled and we had bad prospects for getting back. I decided to fly to Baltimore and then took a train to New York. I just barely made it before the end of our dear friends' engagement party and I showed up with all my luggage, and wearing beach clothes!

Travel pet peeves: Unexpected closing hours of museums, stores, and institutions, especially in Europe.

Travel quirks: I pat the plane! My father was on a plane that was hijaked to Cuba in the '60s, and after that he invented a special plane pat for good luck. Since I grew up with this quirk, I do it too. It's very specific: when boarding is called, you must transfer your bags to your left hand, start down the corridor with your left foot, and upon entering the plane you must close your left eye and, with your right eye, look all the way down the plane as far as you can see while you pat the plane door, and you must say "Good Plane." I always get a friendly but concerned look from the stewardesses.

Most interesting thing you've eaten while traveling: We had dinner at our inn in Aeroskobing - a small Danish island - where a frau served us an Egg Cake; it was basically a baked egg dish piled two feet high with fried pig skin.

Unusual souvenier: A real viking drinking horn from Sweden.

Favorite short jaunt: If you travel about an hour and 45 minutes southwest of New York, you will find yourself around Lambertville, NJ/New Hope, PA. It's a really neat area with cute, quirky shops and activities, such as river tubing, or biking along the Delaware River, and vintage or antique shopping. On Sundays, we go to the Golden Nugget antique market in Lambertville, NJ and have lunch at a cute cafe called Lovin' Oven in Frenchtown, NJ, where the food is from local farms. I usually go here on my way to or from Philadelphia, where I grew up. If you go to Philadelphia, you must check out Village Whiskey for drinks and snacks.

Recommended road read: I like short stories for traveling - I recommend the fairy tales of Herman Hesse, ok...and the Dan Brown book you buy at the airport.

Most used travel resources: Time Out, DK and Gridskipper.com.

Favorite longer vacation: Several years ago, I went to Scandinavia for a month, including Stockholm (our home base); Copenhagen; Bergen, Norway; and the magical islands of Aeroskobing and Gothland. My favorite part was when we were on the boat over to Gothland and everyone started changing into Medieval clothing. We had no idea what was going on! When we got to the island, it was as though we had gone back in time. When we got to the island it turned out it was a "Medieval Week"... we met some fun characters.

Ever done a vacation swap? When I was 14, my family swapped houses with another family who lived in the Alps in France. It was great - they had a party for us when we arrived in the town and I made lots of cool French friends who taught me how to smoke a cigarette, and I translated the lyrics of Nirvana for them - what a swap.

Best hotel: The coolest hotel is The Hotel Fox in Copenhagen, the most indulgent hotel is the Four Seasons Uruguay.

Any tip for improving our flying experiences? Always bring bread and cheese for the journey!

The last 2 weeks have been filled with adventures from Coast to Coast! Let's start with LA where I went to show my stuff in the Green room at Designer's and Agents. We ended up staying at the Chateau Marmont after another hotel mysteriously lost our reservation the day before we were about to depart, how sad : )

The Bar Marmont was amazing, not only because it had butterflies all over the ceiling but...

the food was so good that we didn't need to use the vintage kitchen in our room once!

I want to order this terrarium as a wintertime home for my frog!

and I even found a really cute hand painted pair of clogs

Last night while waiting for a table at Animal, I walked across the street to go to to Family, and my eye was drawn to this little book called Sweet Tomb, I read a few pages and fell in love I cant wait to read the rest on the plane on my way back from LA!

We interrupt our regular programming to bring you five ways you can join us in helping the relief efforts on the Gulf Coast. Since the April 20 explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon rig, teams have been working to rescue animals and organizations have also come up with creative ways to absorb excess oil. Although there are many ways to donate money or even volunteer your time in the region), here are our suggestions:

National Wildlife Federation
Text "WILDLIFE" to 20222 to donate $10 to the National Wildlife Federation. Your money will help with the organization's immediate response work as well as long-term, on-the-ground efforts to protect wildlife such as restoring nesting and breeding grounds.

International Bird Rescue Research Center
If seeing the birds covered in oil is really pulling on your heartstrings, adopt one. Damage to habitats, whether caused by the oil spill or other reasons, leaves many birds orphaned. The bird you adopt will even be tagged with a code unique to you as part of the center's research.

Oxfam America
Animals aren't the only ones in need of some support. Oxfam America has been working in the Gulf Coast region since Hurricane Katrina and now they are turning their attention to the communities whose livelihoods depend on the wetlands and marshes. Money will go to help support local organizations and immediate needs like HAZ-MAT training for fishermen.

Matter of Trust
Oily hair may be a faux pas, but donating your locks to suck up spilled oil certainly wouldn't be. Hair, fur, and fleece can be made into tubular boons that absorb oil in the water along coastlines. Salon owners, individuals, alpaca farmers, groomers, and anyone with a surplus of hair can donate. All donations are currently going straight to the Gulf.

Oceana
With a scary up-to-the-minute tracker of the number of gallons spilled since the explosion (24 million as of this morning), Oceana offers an opportunity to get involved that doesn't mean opening your wallet, but using your voice. Although they recognize the steps the President has taken (like suspending Artic offshore drilling) Oceana believes offshore drilling will never be safe. If you agree, they have a petition with close to 80 thousand signatures you can sign.

Over the weekend we drove up to Brimfield Mass. to look for antique treasures, but after spending 3 hours walking amongst thousands of people and trinkets and picking up a cute vintage swimsuit, we headed for more relaxing surroundings in Newport RI for lobster rolls, boat rides and a fascinating book on Gypsies.

Its very important as a designer and a person to get out there in the world and take an adventure. On this particular trip to Virginia we did a lot. We went to vineyards, romped around in waterfalls, saw bears and deers in the forest, explored caves, visited Thomas Jefferson's house, had really great food, and went to DC for my talk at the Corcoran Gallery, and we did it all in 4 fun filled days.

We had a little weekend adventure in Key West, They had very interesting wild life, in the town there were roosters and chickens walking around everywhere, and the highlight of the trip, the Hemingway house was ruled by what seamed like a hundred cats! There were also hundreds of alligators, dolphins, and prehistoric looking birds, it was a world very much alive! They also had a lot of nice hats!

I was lucky to get a good last minute seat to see and hear The Dirty Projectors play their Getty Address with Alarm will Sound Chamber Ensemble at Lincoln Center Friday night! I made them flannel hooded capes with matching dresses in Red Yellow and Blue, colors symbolic to the piece, Dave wore the Hazmat Poncho, they all looked spectacular!

Dirty Projectors Rock out at the Ace

Lasts night the Diry Projectors played the Opening Ceremony party at the Ace Hotel with Solange! Amber and Angel were wearing clothes by Samantha Pleet and the drummer was wearing a Patrick Pleet Shirt. I was lucky enough to snap some pictures, they looked and sounded awesome!

The Adventure Club

This summer was filed with so many amazing adventures, here are a few from a scouting trip for my film/lookbook location in Vermont. Even the drive up their was inspiring.We went there with friends who worked on our film, David Black and Jacqueline Di Milia our photographer director duo, Johnathan Dortch the Editor, Turner the stylist and her boyfriend Jeff who did the graphic design. The next week we went scouting in upstate New York at an equally magical location that was picked in the end. There are so many amazing pictures from this that I have spent months editing them and I still have so many more to go through, everyone went camera crazy even patrick and I, this is because except for a few of us, everyone was a professional photographer. These are all shots I took, their pictures are even better but this is my blog after all.

If you like the look of the treat from my last post, come to Circa Now Friday night I will be baking up a batch for the party, try one if you dare, they taste better then they look!I know its not traditional to serve minced pies at a Hanukah party but it brings me back to the time I was in London during the holidays. Stores would stay open late and hand them out with hot spiced wine, New York needs that too!

Friday night I went to see Louise Ingalls Sturges show "Tangled up in Blue"at COURT on Mulberry Street. It was such a great party that tourists were taking pictures as if it was a phinomina never seen before as they were walking by. The show was amazing and so is the store!
